Skilled Migrant Category
Immigration New Zealand has a Skilled Migrant Category, to ensure that potential immigrants possess the skills that will most benefit the nation. The Skilled Migrant Category is the main channel for those seeking permanent residency.
Applicants who are aged between 20 and 55 and possess qualifications and/or work experience in key industries – including, but not limited to, the trades, education, health, engineering and agriculture – may be eligible to gain permanent residency under the Skilled Migrant Category. Applicants must also meet health and English proficiency criterion.
Applicants are awarded points based on their relevant skills and experience. Interested parties may submit an Expression of Interest via the Immigration New Zealand website. Each week, Immigration New Zealand invites applicants with an EOI score of more than 140 to apply for a visa. If there are enough places left, applicants with a score of 100 – 140 are further scrutinised. Once the applicant is accepted, the usual visa application applies. Family members who are travelling with the applicant will also need to provide references, medical records and proof of English speaking abilities.
Some applicants may only be issued a temporary nine month visa. If the applicant finds gainful employment in their field during this time, they will be offered full residential status.
